Harpists


Given the youth of the Khmer harp, there are still few harpists in Cambodia. We will quote here those we know, and solicit others to manifest themselves on our Contact page.

Patrick Kersalé

Patrick Kersalé is ethno-archaeo-musicologist. He is the founder of Sounds of Angkor and the initiator of Khmer harp revival in Cambodia. In 2013, he was the first harp teacher for Sngoun Kavei Serey Roth, Pov Reaksmeymony, Chen Sopheak, Him Sophy, Sinat Nhok ... He continues today to teach harp technique at the Sounds of Angkor Academy in Siem Reap.

He creates and interprets his own works on the Khmer harp, notably through his ESCALES.


Chen Sopheak

Chen Sopheak is now one of the best harpists in Cambodia. He played the harp for four years at the prestigious Amansara hotel in Siem Reap and also for the 37th UNESCO International Congress in Phnom Penh. He was also the leader of the musical development of the Khmer harp in Siem Reap because I lived by the family of master Man Men. He also taught the troupe of Sacred Dancers of Angkor in Banteay Srei.


Men Pheakdey

Men Pheakdey is one of the best harpists of Cambodia. He is a member of a famous family of traditional musicians from the city of Siem Reap Angkor. He learned the harp from Chen Sopheak who lived with his family for a few years.

Men Pheakdey plays daily at the Sofitel Phokeethra of Siem Reap, and teaches at the Sounds of Angkor Academy.


Sngoun Kavei Serey Roth

Sngoun Kavei Serey Roth is, along with Pov Reaksmeymony, the harpist who has made the Khmer harp known through her performances on stage and on television. She is the daughter of the maker Keo Sonan Kavei and the first student of Patrick Kersalé. She has recently performed harp in Paris, Boston, New York and Melbourne for Bangsokol: A Requiem for Cambodia.


Chhorn Sovannary

Chhorn Sovannary is currently the harp teacher of the Royal University of Fine Arts in Phnom Penh.
